چکیده

This paper studies properties of promotion-based incentive schemes. Two general promotion rules, tournaments and standards, are compared. These differ in many ways, but are shown to have virtually identical empirical predictions about the structure of compensation in hierarchies. A relatively general characterization of multi-person tournaments is presented. Several empirically testable hypotheses are developed, especially on the relationship between the promotion probability and optimal rewards from promotion. Promotion Incentives and Teacher Effort in China

This paper examines the effort incentives of teachers in rural China. China employs a complex system of annual evaluations and promotions for civil servants in which good evaluations, along with a teacher's years of service and education, make teachers eligible to apply for rank promotions. A model of promotions is developed in which agents are both incentivized, and are sorted into ranks by ab...

Promotions, Multiskilling and Incentives for Skills∗

We study incentives for skill acquisition when skills cannot be contracted on. Our framework has two features. First, workers can acquire both firm specific and general skills at a cost, and second, job assignments signal skill acquisition to a less informed labor market. Our key insight is that each skill performs a different function. The firm specific skill helps in revealing information to ...

Competitive One-to-One Promotions

One-to-one promotions are possible when consumers are individually addressable and firms know something about each customer’s preferences. We explore the competitive effects of one-to-one promotions in a model with two competing firms where the firms differ in size and consumers have heterogeneous brand loyalty. We find that one-to-one promotions always lead to an increase in price competition ...

Job assignments as a screening device ∗

We study intra-firm competition for promotions when the ability of the competing candidates is imperfectly observed. We show that firms should offer the jobs that require the highest degree of involvement to the candidates whose ability is known with least certainty (typically, juniors and outsiders) because these individuals have the strongest career-concern incentives to perform efficiently. ...

Promotions and Incentives: The Case of Multi-Stage Elimination Tournaments Promotion tournaments play an important role for the provision of incentives in firms.
